Awesome Hike-O-Ree

Crew 1346 had either the largest or one of the largest contingent's at the 24th Annual NCAC Hike-O-Ree in Front Royal, VA. We took 13 youth and 7 adults and put three individual crews on the trail in their Philmont 2014 expedition crews. Crew 718-J enjoyed 9.7 miles on the Sugarloaf Trail, crossing Hogback Mountain and spending about 4 miles on the Appalachian Trail. Crew 803-E1 hiked 9.1 miles along the ridge of Massanutten Mountain. And, Crew 803-E2 hiked 10.6 miles in Thornton Hollow, including hiking on the Appalachian Trail.

Additionally, the crews had the opportunity to cook their first backpacking style meal together. Everyone had a great time, learned a lot, and learned there is much more to do to prepare for Philmont 2014! Photos will be posted in the Gallery!

On Friday night we watched part of the movie, Appalachian Impression, an epic story about hiking the Appalachian Trail from Georgia to Maine. The program takes the viewer on a six-month, 2,180-mile journey along the most famous long-distance hiking trail in the world. Along the way, we meet hikers who have embarked on this trek, carrying everything they need on their backs. We hear their stories, and experience the thrills and challenges of daily life on the Trail. The full movie covers all fourteen states, the changing of the seasons, footwear, food, shelters, volunteer trail crews, and Leave No Trace Ethics.

On Saturday night, we saw video clips from the newest BSA High Adventure Base, The Summit in West Virginia, from Floodwood Mountain Scout Reservation in the Adirondacks, from Matagamon Maine High Adventure Base, and from Philmont!
